GeoCaching
Started our GeoCacheing adventures last weekend. Talk about a new way to enjoy getting out and seeing the outdoors.
For those of you who might not know what geocacheing is, basicly it is a treasure hunt. You utilize a handheld GPS to find the location of a hidden cache of “treasure”(my son really likes calling it that). Most items range under $10. But the idea is not to just take things out. You must leave something in return. You should also sign the log book saying you were there and what you traded.
Our first geocache was rather simple. I chose one near a trail we hiked frequently. I had no idea that we passed the location of this treasure many times. It was quite satisfying and the kids really enjoyed the search. Of course I had to let them lead the way with the GPS.
Our second one was quite a bit more difficult. Hadn’t realized I picked one of the harder ones near the top of the list. I just picked it because it was close to home and there were two near the same location.
There was another couple who was searching for the same cache we were. It was quite a ways off the beaten trail and I never would have found it simply because I accidently transposed two numbers. So we were basicly 200 feet off the mark. Fortunately the other couple was kind enough to help find the cache.
The third was quite a bit easier. I’m suprised we haven’t stumbled upon it during one of our beach clean up sessions with the scouts.
Went to look for a fourth I had picked out but by the time I figured out that we would have to do a bit of hiking from the highway to get to it, it was time to go home. This was pretty fortunate simply because it will be a very difficult cache to find from the description of the location. Maybe we will try it next weekend.
