What is in a Name?
I have always found it slightly amusing that people lack the ability to think of a good role playing name. Especially with so many tools to be found on the web to create those names.
It really doesn’t take all that much time to think of something that doesn’t have numbers in it. Though I guess if you are playing a droid you might have one that would have numbers.
Think about it. How many fantasy and science fiction novels have you seen with names of characters like “v” or “i_love_nick”. I bet it would be close to nil.
Sometimes names could be as easy as a random keyboard stroke with some well placed vowels to give it some sound. Other times, names could also be from a combination of things like siblings names.
The name I use, for example, comes from the first three letters of each of my children. I thought it was pretty ingenious and unique at the time. That was about 7 years ago. Now I find out that it is a pretty common family name in france. Oh well.
Even a name from history or a novel is better than some of the ones I have seen recently on the MMORPG’s, MuD’s and other online games I play.
Of course, it helps if the rules for names is enforced for where ever you play.
It all comes down to taking your time to pick a name. It will define your character. If it is a racial name, do some research. There are lots of resources you can find with Google to use.
